The Rubin Thomlinson report, which concluded that UPEI leadership had failed to create a safe and respectful learning environment for students, was originally heavily redacted by the universitys counsel. – Stu NeatbyArticle contentNew revelations from the freshly less-redacted version of the Rubin Thomlinson report have dropped like a time bomb over at UPEI. Don’t get too excited; it’s not completely un-redacted (I mean, come on, were you born yesterday?) but it seems that the darn Rubin Thomlinson report they wanted so much to “just move on” from keeps coming back like a bad dream. And no matter how many millions of dollars the UPEI board of governors spends hiring local law firms to keep the wolves from their door, the truth just won’t die.THIS CONTENT IS RESERVED FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.Subscribe now to access this story and more:Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsSUBSCRIBE TO UNLOCK MORE ARTICLES.Subscribe or sign in to your account to continue your reading experience.Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsRegister to unlock more articles.Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience.Access additional stories every monthShare your thoughts and join the conversation in our commenting communityGet email updates from your favourite authorsSign In or Create an AccountorArticle contentArticle contentOne of the doozies fresh off the press is this freshly-unredacted gem of a quote from one Rubin Thomlinson interviewee: “UPEI is the most miserable, soul sucking place of work I have ever experienced. Managers talk about other employees behind their backs to other staff members; harassment and bullying is acceptable.”Article contentArticle content“Soul sucking”? “Managers talking about employees behind their backs”? Could it be? How about malice unfolding in the bright light of day, son? Yes. I experience it, daily.Article contentArticle content$5 million in legal feesArticle contentArticle contentEver since I started writing these little op-eds for The Guardian several years ago — in an effort to let the P.E.I. public know how their tax dollars are being spent and expose what really goes on at “Secrecy Central”— I have had to wear my best disguise and look for administrators lurking behind trees (cue the music from Psycho) every time I cross campus. It’s super threatening! They really should rename the joint East Point Military Academy: “Prepare 20 lashes for Sessional-Magner! Why, Sir? Insubordination of course! Again! Censor that little slug!”Article contentArticle contentBut here’s the dead-serious part every Islander should hear clear as a bell as they turn down the heat all winter to save enough money to put their children’s UPEI tuition together: As indicated by recent UPEIFA access to information requests, the board of governors has spent almost $5 million, yes, $5 million, of your taxpayer dollars (and student tuition revenue) on legal fees since 2024. Five million dollars drained like gold lava into their favoured law firms— in one year! If you add on all the gold that has gone to HR Atlantic’s farcical “investigations” over the years, we’re likely up into the stratosphere.Article contentArticle contentAnd now they’re telling faculty to tighten their belts and prepare for impending cuts to student programs!? Outrageous! If these people think their insidious persistent intrusion into our classrooms, their blatant effort to censor every critical voice — all of it hiding behind what they call “a duty to manage” — is not going to be exposed to the P.E.I. public as the rampant nasty parochialism it is, they have got another think coming.
