(Luke Ettinger/CBC)A temporary Canada Post location has opened in Springhill weeks after a flood caused extensive damage to the town’s post office and forced residents to travel to Amherst to pick up their mail. As of Friday, mail and parcel pickup is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 43 Main St., the former town hall building that’s owned by the Municipality of Cumberland and also leases space to the RCMP.Mayor Rod Gilroy, who had expressed disappointment when the postal service initially declined the space due to security concerns, said he was pleased a temporary solution had been reached.“It worked out very, very well,” Gilroy said. “At the end of the day, I could look back and say it would have been nice to have done it … two or three weeks sooner. But I’m just really glad that we’re going to have a post office back in Springhill.” On the weekend of Oct. 11, a waterline break at the post office damaged the structure, equipment and customer mail. The building remains closed while repairs are underway.Since Oct. 24, Springhill residents had been able to get their mail at the Amherst post office, about 30 minutes away. Gilroy said all three levels of government were active in seeing a temporary location established. On social media Thursday, Cumberland-Colchester MP Alana Hirtle thanked those who “helped us advocate for a better solution for residents.”Canada Post declined an interview on the matter. The Crown corporation previously said repairs to its Springhill location could take up to two months to complete.Residents are required to bring valid government-issued photo identification to pick up their mail at the temporary site, Canada Post said in a statement. No retail services are available at that location. A spokesperson said those services are available at Canada Post outlets in Amherst and Oxford.MORE TOP STORIESABOUT THE AUTHORLuke Ettinger is a reporter with CBC Nova Scotia based in Truro.
