The province expects about $600,000 will be returned to the government and donated over the coming months.Cheques will be issued to food banks monthly beginning in January after sales have been finalized and expenses calculated, the release notes. American products will not be reordered once the current stock is sold, the release said.“The coming months tend to be tough for many and I’m glad that we can support some of the people and organizations who do so much for Islanders in need,” Finance Minister Jill Burridge is quoted as saying in the release.“Like other provinces in the region, we are fully committed to Team Canada and are prioritizing our local producers retaining as much of their expanded shelf space as possible.”Earlier this year, P.E.I., along with other Maritime provinces, pulled American alcohol products from provincial liquor store shelves in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.The province said U.S. alcohol will be available for sale in all PEILCC corporate, agency and licensed stores starting Thursday, although some locations may experience delays due to shipping logistics.P.E.I.’s move follows similar actions in other provinces in the Maritimes.Nova Scotia is selling its remaining $14-million inventory of U.S. alcohol, with net profits of about $4 million going to Feed Nova Scotia and other community food groups.New Brunswick also began selling its remaining U.S. alcohol stock at a warehouse location back in October.ABOUT THE AUTHORThinh Nguyen is a digital reporter with CBC P.E.I.
