Active wildfires in New Brunswick dwindling, with largest blaze showing no growth

(Government of New Brunswick)The number of active wildfires in New Brunswick continues to decrease.Eighteen fires continue to burn, down from 19 on Thursday, according to a Friday morning update from the provincial government.That includes four out-of-control fires, which are Chief’s, Beaver Lake Stream, Mount Goold and Rocky Brook — the same four fires in the northern half of the province that were listed as out of control on Thursday night. The largest of the out-of-control fires, Beaver Lake Stream, does not appear to have grown, according to the province’s fire watch dashboard. It remains listed at 238 hectares.Friday’s update comes after an intense month for wildfires in New Brunswick, with the largest blaze, straddling the northern border of the city of Miramichi, surpassing 1,000 hectares. Another fire near Moncton threatened homes and prompted evacuation advisories.At least 39 wildfires burned across the province last week.The drop in active fires also comes during a week of cooler weather. At the height of the wildfires, New Brunswick was experiencing humidex levels in the 40s, with temperatures in the high 30s. On Thursday, though, the hotspot in the province was Sussex Four Corners, at 26.5 C.The province says it isn’t planning to hold a news conference about the wildfires on Friday.
