‘Aggressive dogs’ unleashed on police in pursuit of stolen pickup truck

(Robert Short/CBC)RCMP in Nova Scotia say “aggressive dogs” were unleashed on police in pursuit of a suspect connected to a stolen pickup truck on Thursday.That morning around 8:30 a.m. AT, according to a news release, Kings District RCMP responded to a report of a truck stolen from New Minas. The owner told police debit and credit cards that had been left in the white Ford F-350 had been used in other parts of the province.By 2 p.m. that afternoon, the Lunenburg District RCMP learned the stolen F-350 was travelling on Highway 103 and was now towing a camper trailer which officers determined had also been reported stolen.Police found the pickup truck on Port Medway Road, but when they tried to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled, “causing the camper to hit a utility truck” before getting back onto Highway 103.The RCMP said they did not follow the truck onto the highway “in the interest of public safety,” but the RCMP Air Service started monitoring the truck’s whereabouts.’Aggressive dogs’ releasedThe Bridgewater Police Service then got involved while the truck passed through their jurisdiction. The RCMP Police Dog Service was also brought in to help.By 4 p.m., the RCMP said the truck stopped near Exit 7 and the driver fled on foot into a wooded area.”The driver let several aggressive dogs out of the truck as he fled,” the RCMP news release said.Those dogs prevented police and the police dogs from being able to follow the suspect on foot.When it was determined police could safely proceed, Lunenburg RCMP and the police dog service tracked down a suspect. A 36-year-old man from Billtown in Kings County, N.S., was arrested.Police looking for videoHe was charged with several offences, including theft of a motor vehicle and misuse of a credit card. He had his first court appearance Friday in Bridgewater provincial court and remains in custody.The police dogs and the suspect’s dogs were not injured, said police.”Officers appreciated support from staff at a kennel in the area, who took custody of the dogs,” the news release said.Police are looking to view dashcam footage that shows the white Ford F-350 towing a white and black Wildwood camper on Highway 103 on Port Medway Road or in other parts of Kings, Queens or Lunenburg counties.Police can be contacted directly at 1-800-803-7267.Anonymous tips can be shared with Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
