(Srini Madhavan/CBC)More than 1,500 hikers celebrated winning a Guinness World Record for most people hiking simultaneously at Cypress Mountain Saturday in West Vancouver, B.C.Tina Shi, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, announced that 1,560 participants broke the previous record of 815 hikers.”Congratulations, you are officially amazing!” she declared.Shi told CBC News that official stewards counted participants in different areas to make sure no one stopped hiking, which could have disqualified the event.She noted the record is specifically for hiking together and not about getting to the top.”It’s a kind of spirit that encourages people to enjoy their community and do the same activity outdoors in the beautiful summer together,” she said.Tina Shi, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, announced that the group hiking record had been broken. (Srini Madhavan/CBC)The event was organized by New Zealand outdoor clothing company Kathmandu.Company general manager Nick Russell said the free event was about creating community and making it accessible.”There’s people here of of all levels, from avid hikers to people that are, you know, getting on the mountain for the first time.”Participants Keyvan Eslami and Niloufar Badihi said they’re both frequent hikers.”This looked like a good opportunity for us to do another hike!” Eslami said.He said he was surprised at how many people showed up for the event.Both hikers encouraged others of all ages to try local hikes.”Everybody should do some sort of hike, especially in the Vancouver area….
