Bail hearing for the man accused of killing Samuel Bird postponed until November

The man who stands accused of killing teenager Samuel Bird had his bail hearing put off until Nov. 10 because the Crown isn’t able to hand over the disclosure documents to his lawyer. On Oct. 15, Edmonton police arrested and charged Bryan Farrell, 38 with second-degree murder and “interfering with a body in relation to the homicide.” Disclosure documents are essentially details of the case against him and by law must be given to his defence lawyers. Outside of the court house in Edmonton, Bird’s grandfather spoke about the support the family has received. “Every child matters. Samuel Bird matters. That’s what we were all here for,” said Calvin Bird. “I really appreciate the support that is behind me here. I don’t know half of them or most of them. I’m really grateful for them being here. I’m grateful for the car horns that go by here.” Bird is talking about the dozens who showed up at the courthouse. “We are all down here rallying for Samuel Bird because we want justice,” said Cassie Thomas. “Because he was only a 14 year old boy. So we came down here.” Supporters of Samuel Bird’s family outside the Edmonton courthouse on Monday. Photo: Chris Stewart/APTN. So being a part of the community it hits different.” Farrell is also charged with a total of 13 offences including arson and assaulting a police officer. “All we want is justice to be served, and we hope to get that,” Calvin Bird said. “It’s been too long without knowing where my grandson was, but last week we found out where he was, and now he can be put to rest.” Farrell is remanded in custody.
