Berthiaume’s team will face the U.S. on Oct. 31 at the RECC with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. Article content‘I attended the U17 camp in the summer, and anyone who attended that was available for selection. I was hoping to make the team from there, so when I received the call, I was just very excited,” Berthiaume, currently with the Cape Breton Eagles of the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey (QMJHL) League, said. Article content“I thought I had a good camp, a good showing, so a chance of being selected.” Article contentWhile with the Eagles, who drafted him in the second round, 25th overall, last spring, Berthiaume has yet to see any game action and is actually officially listed as being part of the Truro Jr. A Bearcats’ roster, the team he did start and picked up a win for, on Sept. 20 versus the Amherst Ramblers. Article contentArticle content Stellarton’s Sam Berthiaume received his wish when he was selected by the Cape Breton Eagles in the second round of the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League draft on June 7. Photo by ContributedArticle contentHe talked about his unique situation to start off the 2025-26 season.  Article content“I’m here with Cape Breton, practicing and trying to get better every day,” Berthiaume, the only Nova Scotian, Maritimer even, named to either Team Canada rosters, said. “It has been hard to get into some games, but I’m still 15, and I have a lot of time to develop. I’m just working hard in practice to get better every day. So, I’m definitely staying sharp and will be ready for the tournament.” Article contentAsked if he might get a game in with Cape Breton or Truro before the tournament, Berthiaume said he isn’t sure, but if it does happen, he is “prepared and ready to go.”  Article contentConfident of that is Truro goalie coach Jacob Fancy, who also worked with him while he was a U15 Major Bearcat. Article content“Sam is a goaltender with elite foot speed, explosive movements, great puck-handling ability, and incredible athleticism. Anyone who watches him can see that,” Fancy said, giving a scouting report of Berthiaume’s abilities.
