Toronto fans expected their club to clinch the series with a Game 5 win in Toronto, but they were listless in a shutout 4-0 loss.THIS CONTENT IS RESERVED FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.Subscribe now to access this story and more:Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsSUBSCRIBE TO UNLOCK MORE ARTICLES.Subscribe or sign in to your account to continue your reading experience.Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsRegister to unlock more articles.Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience.Access additional stories every monthShare your thoughts and join the conversation in our commenting communityGet email updates from your favourite authorsSign In or Create an AccountorArticle contentThe Leafs did bounce back to clinch the series with a 4-2 win in Game 6 in Ottawa on May 1.But Toronto’s play has shattered my faith in the Maple Leafs and, so far in the playoffs, this club has shown that they are not much different than previous Leafs’ teams that suffered playoff failures. It’s also quite clear to me Mitch Marner’s days in Toronto are numbered. He’ll be headed elsewhere, most likely to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where ex-Leafs GM Kyle Dubas would dearly love to have him on a line with Sidney Crosby.Marner and Auston Matthews were on the ice for all goals in the Game 5 loss and continued sub-par performances will make Marner’s departure a more palatable sell in Toronto, if they lose early.I picked the Leafs to go a long way in this year’s playoffs. I thought they’d play with more intensity and fire but, right now, I’m looking for the nearest lifeboat and may just abandon ship as they face the well-rounded and experienced Stanley Cup-champion Florida Panthers in Round 2. I’m cheering for them but. . .Article contentBlue JaysThe Blue Jays have been a disappointment thus far. They have good starting pitching and bullpen but no hitting.I said last winter when the Jays acquired second baseman Andres Gimenez that he would tighten up the middle infield, but such a huge salary for a guy coming off a terrible season was far too risky. I said, at the time, it looked like a salary dump by Cleveland. He’s hitting .176, right now and he comes as advertised – great fielder, no hitting. In baseball issues, I’m like The Pope in religious matters – infallible. The Jays’ base-running is pathetic. How many times have you heard me say, “Never take chances when you’re behind, only in rare circumstances.”It’s called winning baseball, and after three years under manager John Schneider, nothing has changed. Two come-from-behind wins over Boston on April 30 and May 1 were just what the Blue Jays needed. Let’s hope the bats can stay hot.Local baseballIn local baseball, you’ve got to admire our longtime friend Don McDougall, who brought the Blue Jays to Canada. McDougall is spearheading the new artificial baseball diamond in Mill River and now is supporting the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders, the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League champions, in their fundraiser at the P.E.I. Brewing Company on May 3.Article contentOne auction item has a stay at the beautiful Mill River Resort, green fees, etc. as part of a package. Also, there are two rounds of golf with a cart at Glasgow Hills.Read More FIDDLER’S FACTS: P.E.I. teams in championship spotlight FIDDLER’S FACTS: High on Maple Leafs Hockey poolsVarious Stanley Cup hockey pools are creating plenty of excitement Island wide.
