Vincent Pageau has been acquitted on a sexual assault charge, after a provincial court judge in Campbellton expressed doubts about the alleged victim’s recollections of events in May 2022. (CBC News)An RCMP officer from northern New Brunswick has been found not guilty of sexual assault in a case that stretched back three years. Const. Vincent Pageau was acquitted on the single charge in Campbellton Provincial Court on Thursday. The alleged acts occurred on May 16 and 17, 2022, in Tide Head, just west of Campbellton. Pageau was not on duty at the time. When the trial began in September, the victim alleged that Pageau had touched her thigh in a hot tub at his home, where she was a guest. She said she left the hot tub and later lost consciousness in the bathroom. The woman said she remembered moments where Pageau touched her breasts and laid down next to her. Both Pageau and the woman confirmed they had consumed alcohol the evening of the alleged events. But Pageau refuted the allegations, saying he did not sleep near her in the night and never touched her breasts. Pageau did say he had seen the woman naked, but said that she had taken off her swimsuit of her own free will. He said he did not ask her to take off her clothes in front of him. Judge says accused gave ‘very plausible’ testimonyOn Thursday, Judge Martin Goguen said he had reasonable doubt about the victim’s recollection during her testimony, and said her memory was likely fragmented due to alcohol consumption.Goguen said he considered Pageau’s testimony to have offered “very plausible explanations” and believed his account was accurate. Both Crown prosecutor Logan Landry and Pageau declined comment to Radio-Canada.Pageau’s lawyer, Johanne Thériault Paulin, said she believed the judge gave her client’s testimony more weight. The charge against Pageau was laid in January 2024 by the Nova Scotia-based Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates serious allegations against police officers in the Maritimes.
