In fact, it still hadn’t been called as of 2:30 a.m. on April 29.While this isn’t exactly a Cinderella story that took place in the riding on Monday, Conservative Jonathan Rowe and Liberal Anthony Germain were locked in a tight race to replace longtime area MP Churence Rogers — who announced he was retiring as the area’s MP last December — that only got tighter as the night moved on. At one point, Germain and Rowe were tied with three polls remaining. With one poll left to count, the declaration of a winner was still in doubt. As of 2:30 a.m., with a single poll containing just 0.37 per cent of the vote still uncounted, Germain led Rowe by a count of 19,418 to 19,372 — a far cry from just a couple of hours before, when he had a firm lead. It was the agony and the ecstasy, so to speak. Meanwhile, the NDP’s Liam Ryan had received 1,651 votes. The remaining poll wasn’t expected to be counted on Monday. Central Newfoundland MP Clifford Small kept his seat, while Conservative Carol Anstey is the new MP for the riding of Long Range Mountains, representing an increase of two ridings in the province for the Conservatives. That means, of course, that the Liberals lost ground in NL as they picked up four seats. By the numbers One thing is for sure: the people of Terra Nova-The Peninsulas came out to vote. Once each of the 270 riding polls had reported in, some 64 per cent of the over 63,000 eligible voters had turned in a ballot. In total, over 40,000 votes were cast on April 28, among the highest percentages across the province. It is anticipated that the last poll will be counted on Tuesday.
