Photo by Richard MacKenzie /Truro NewsArticle contentArticle content“What an amazing feeling to win this tournament so close to home,” said Team Red forward Benjamin Veitch, from St. John’s.  Article contentVeitch, who plays for his hometown Regiment, a new team in the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), scored his team’s sixth goal into an empty net to seal the victory. It was their second empty net goal as Team White desperately tried to even the score.   Article content“This group of guys has gelled so well over the last two weeks, and I’m so grateful to be a part of this. What an amazing feeling … my first time playing for my country and to finish it in front of a sold-out barn, with family and friends here, is something I’ve always dreamt of, and it’s even better than I could have imagined.” Article contentTeam Red head coach Ryan McDonald said it’s hard to put into words the effort and attention to detail his team put in during their short time together.  Article contentArticle content“The work started in the summer when we got together for our first training camp, and that led to an incredible two weeks here,” McDonald said. “From the staff to the coaches to the players, everyone put in an incredible amount of work, and to finish this night celebrating at centre ice, there is no better feeling.” Article contentTeam Red defenceman Quinn Norman said the victory means a lot.  Article content“All my friends and family are watching back home, so it’s great to come out with the gold medal,” said the Conception Bay South, Newfoundland native.  Article content“We had a game plan which we stuck to,” Norman added on what it took to defeat their fellow Canadians. “We worked hard, stuck to that plan, and it went pretty well.” Article content Team White goaltender Sam Berthiaume, a Stellarton native who played for the Truro Major U15 Bearcats, skates up to accept his silver medal.
