(Elections Canada)One of only two local ridings that’s kept its borders through a redistribution, the former Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke does have a new name.The regular independent boundary review that followed the 2021 census concluded it was better to recognize the Algonquin Anishinābe history in the area than the small part of Nipissing District it holds. It’s otherwise made up of Renfrew County and includes Garrison Petawawa and Pikwàkanagàn.Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke voted Liberal until Cheryl Gallant swung it for the Canadian Alliance in 2000. She has held it since. (Gallant is tied with Lanark-Frontenac’s Scott Reid for the longest-serving local MP.)Gallant got just under 50 per cent of the vote in 2021, topping the second-place NDP by more than 16,000 ballots.Campus advance voting is April 13 to 18, general advance voting is April 18 to 21 and the deadline to apply to vote by mail is April 22. Elections Canada has more information on voting options ahead of election day on Monday, April 28.Here are the candidates so far.
