According to reports online, MacDonell re-injured his shoulder recently during the Steelheads’ first-round playoff series with the Oshawa Generals. Oshawa went on to win the series in six games.In other OHL news, former Cape Breton Eagles head coach Jake Grimes and the Saginaw Spirit were eliminated from the first-round of the playoffs in five games by the Erie Otters. Grimes was an associate coach with the team and won a Memorial Cup with Saginaw last year.Dominion hockey player transfers to St. Francis Xavier X-Women for 2025-26 seasonA Cape Breton hockey player is returning to Atlantic Canada for the 2025-26 hockey season.The St. Francis Xavier X-Women, who claimed the Atlantic University Sport championship last month, recently announced the commitment of forward Samantha Morrison for the upcoming campaign.Article contentThe 20-year-old from Dominion played the last two seasons with the NCAA’s University of Maine Black Bears in Orono, Maine.In 67 games with the Black Bears, Morrison had seven goals and 21 points along with 51 penalty minutes and a minus-16 rating.Morrison was a standout star with the Cape Breton Lynx in 2022-23 and represented Nova Scotia at the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.Strait Pirates announce commitments for 2025-26 NSJHL seasonThe Strait Pirates recently announced a pair of commitments for the 2025-26 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League season.The Port Hawkesbury-based team will welcome defenceman Cohen MacIsaac of Albert Bridge and forward Josh McDonald of New Glasgow for the upcoming season.MacIsaac was an affiliate with the Pirates in 2024-25 and played two seasons with the Sydney Mitsubishi Rush of the Nova Scotia Under-18 Major Hockey League.McDonald was a member of the North Nova Gryphons of the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League. He was the team’s captain in 2024-25 and is considered to be a playmaker.Article contentThe 2025-26 NSJHL season will begin in September.Cape Breton connections win team awards with Acadie-Bathurst TitanSeveral connections to Cape Breton were named team award winners for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan recently.Maddex Marmulak, who has family connections to Sydney, was named the Titan’s rookie of the year, while former Cape Breton Eagles defenceman Emile Perron was named the club’s defensive player of the year for the 2024-25 Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League season.Former Cape Breton Eagles draft picks Colby Huggan was the Titan’s offensive player of the year, while Blake Pilgrim-Edwards was the team’s humanitarian personality of the year for his community involvement.The Titan were eliminated from the QMJHL playoffs earlier this month with a Game 5 loss to Chicoutimi at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst, N.B. It was the team’s final game in Bathurst as the franchise will move to St. John’s, N.L., for the 2025-26 season.Article content
