(CBC)Two Quebec-based companies are accused of violating Newfoundland and Labrador’s Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations, two years after New Brunswick man died at a mine in northern Labrador. In a press release sent Friday, the provincial Government Services Department said the man died on a Tata Steel site, located on the border of eastern Quebec and northwestern Labrador. He was working as a contractor on site when he died.After an investigation by the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Office, the two companies — Tata Steel Minerals Inc., and Produits IdéalTFC Inc. — are now facing seven charges each.Both Tata Steel Minerals and Produits IdéalTFC are are accused of failing to provide necessary equipment, systems and tools, information, instruction, training, supervision and facilities necessary to ensure worker safety, and failing to make sure workers aren’t exposed to hazards.Tata Steel Minerals has also been charged with failing to ensure “a vehicle that weighs 4,500 kilograms or less” is equipped with the necessary equipment to be visible to drivers of production vehicles.Meanwhile, Produits IdéalTFC has been charged with failure “to ensure that work procedures promote the safe interaction of workers and their work environment to minimize the potential for injury,” and failure to prepare traffic control procedures and plans required to ensure safe operation of vehicles.
