Article contentArticle contentCallaghan’s father, Terrence Roy Wilson, was the other co-accused in the arson case and was sentenced in June. Callaghan’s sentencing was delayed while a pre-sentence report was completed. Article contentArticle contentOn Aug. 21, she was ordered to serve 495 days (16 and a half months) in jail, along with three years of probation. However, Callaghan has been in custody since her arrest on Oct. 4, 2025, so she received credit of 481 days for time served, leaving a balance of 14 days to be served. Article contentThe sentence was a joint recommendation from the Crown and the defence, who both acknowledged that if the case had gone to trial, it would have been exceedingly difficult to secure a conviction due to the largely circumstantial evidence available. Article contentThere were no witnesses or video evidence of Wilson and Callaghan actually starting the fire. Given the charges, the Crown would have also had to prove that they went to the house with the intent to commit arson beyond all reasonable doubt. Article contentIn the end, the Crown decided it was better to seek some resolution that involved jail time, rather than risking none by going to trial. Article contentThe assault charges are from a separate incident that took place on April 26 while Callaghan was incarcerated and were perpetrated against two correctional officers. Multiple neighbours were milling around outside. Article contentWhen someone came running with a ladder, police learned that a female resident of the home was stuck on a section of the roof. They managed to get her down with the ladder. Article contentPolice went into the home, crawling on their hands and knees, in an attempt to clear it and find any other people inside. There was no one else there and the officers made it out. Article contentThe flames spread quickly throughout the home and got so big that they jumped to the neighbouring property at 157 Belmont St. There were two people at home there, asleep at the time, but they were awoken by the commotion outside and evacuated safely. That home was also destroyed.
