Each month features a photo of a store in Colchester County from the local museum and archives.Article contentArticle contentThe historeum has great photos of stores around the county in their collection, said archivist and curator Ryan McLellan. This is mainly why they chose the ‘Shop Local’ theme.Article contentArticle content“It also had a lot to do with the cover photo, because this is a very new acquisition to our archives,” he said.Article contentThe cover features the G.C. Stevens’ general store in Masstown, dated Sept. 7, 1898. Photo by COLCHESTER HISTOREUM /Truro NewsArticle content“It just shows the time period, and it’s representative of general stores throughout the province, I think,” he continued.Article contentThere are three stores featured in the calendar that are still standing today: the Earltown General Store, the Dominion Chair Company in Bass River, and the Upper Stewiacke Co-op.Article contentAs for some of the other photos, the buildings still stand, but the store that operates inside has changed. Take Layton and McDorman’s variety store, featured for the month of April, which is now home to Great Village Antiques.Article contentCalendars are $20 and can be bought at the historeum on 29 Young Street. They will also be sold at the Truro Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Nov. 15.Article content
