A correctional officer has been charged after two inmates reported being sexually assaulted while on separate overnight hospital trips in Winnipeg, police say.The sex crimes unit arrested the corrections officer on Wednesday, Winnipeg police said in a news release Tuesday. The 37-year-old man was charged with sexual assault with a weapon and two counts of sexual assault, before being released on an undertaking.The charges come after police say they received separate reports about two adult men who were incarcerated and being treated at a Winnipeg hospital when they were sexually assaulted.The first man was under the guard of two correctional officers at a hospital overnight in December 2024, when he was sexually assaulted with a weapon by one correctional officer, after the other officer temporarily left the room, police said.The man was injured by the assault, police said.Another man was being treated at a hospital overnight in January, under the supervision of two correctional officers. The man was also sexually assaulted with a weapon by a correctional officer after the other correctional officer had left the room, police say.The second man was not physically injured in the assault.Both men did not report the incident until a later date, police said.If you’re in immediate danger or fear for your safety or that of others around you, please call 911.
