Article contentArticle contentArticle contentThe Phoenix defeated the Cougars 25-15 and 25-18 to advance to the gold medal game versus HRM rivals Halifax West. Article contentIn the bronze medal match-up, the Cougars faced École Secondaire du Sommet, also an HRM area school, who had beaten them in the round-robin portion (25-9, 25-20). This time, after dropping the first game 25-15, CEC was able to storm back to win the next two (25-20 and 17-15) to win the match and the bronze medal. Article content“A goal for us going in was to win the tournament, but things don’t always go your way,” said Cougars’ head coach Jack Aucoin immediately following the medal presentation. Article content“But we found a way to gut out a third set win against a tough young team that will be very good in the years to come. It was great to see our group of 13 girls overcome a bit of adversity and stick with each other to earn the bronze.” Article content The CEC junior varsity girls’ volleyball team won their provincial tournament the weekend before the varsity hosted their provincials. The junior varsity tournament was played in Sydney. Article contentArticle content“We’ll have seven or eight seniors next year, and our junior varsity team won provincials, so it’s a great feeding system of good volleyball in this town,” Aucoin said. Article content“It was a fantastic year, a fun year,” he said. “And every weekend I was getting comments for other coaches, from the referees, about how they enjoyed seeing this team have a lot of fun during games and off games (when not competing); that they’re kind, nice, and just a great group of kids.” Article contentIn the final, Halifax West defeated Citadel in two very close games – 27-25 in the first, and then 25-23 in the second, to become provincial champs.
