(Chanss Lagaden/CBC)Cheyann Peeteetuce’s day of testimony ended much the way it began — with the 32-year-old saying she couldn’t recall what happened the day Megan Gallagher was killed. That’s despite the fact Peeteetuce pleaded guilty 10 months ago to manslaughter in Gallagher’s death. On Wednesday, she said she did not recall why she had pleaded guilty. The Crown called Peeteetuce to the witness box to testify on Day 3 of the trial for Roderick Sutherland, who has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, unlawful confinement and offering an indignity to human remains in relation to Gallagher’s 2020 death. His trial is being heard by a jury in Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench.During her testimony, Peeteetuce watched a one-hour videotaped interview that Saskatoon police conducted with her about the day Gallagher was murdered. In the 2022 interview with Staff Sgt. Anthony Boensch, Peeteetuce described how Gallagher was tied to a chair and beaten in a garage on Weldon Avenue. She said that three men, including Sutherland, participated in the assault. When questioned by Crown prosecutor Bill Burge and defence lawyer Blaine Beaven about the interview, however, Peeteetuce repeatedly refused to acknowledge making the statements, or said that she did not remember the details.Earlier, Burge had quizzed Peeteetuce about what happened in the garage.Peeteetuce said that she was a “Facebook friend” with Gallagher and they only met in person once, at that garage.Megan Gallagher was killed in 2020. (Submitted by the Gallagher family)”We were drinking and getting high. A lot of people were there,” Peeteetuce said. She said that she had no previous involvement with Gallagher and did not speak to her at the garage.”We were chilling, getting high, drinking. It’s a big garage,” she said.Peeteetuce said she did not recall how long Gallagher was in the garage, or what happened to her while she was there. She said that she was not paying attention to what happened. At one point, Burge asked Peeteetuce directly whether she could say what she had done to prompt her manslaughter plea earlier this year.”I don’t remember,” she said.Burge also asked whether Peeteetuce could identify Sutherland in the courtroom. Sutherland, with a visible Ace of Spades tattoo on the left side of his neck, sat metres away behind his lawyer Blaine Beaven.Peeteetuce said she could not see him in the courtroom. Later in the day, Burge moved Sutherland’s chair so that he was directly in Peeteetuce’s sightline and then asked again. She still said that she did not see him in the courtroom. The trial, presided over by Justice John Morrall, continues all week.ABOUT THE AUTHORDan Zakreski is a reporter in Saskatoon.
