(CBC)The Fredericton Fire Department has contained a gas leak that shut down part of downtown on Thursday afternoon. First announced at 4:05 p.m., the department said on social media that the leak had been contained as of 5:17 p.m. and that the evacuated zone would slowly be reopened. The leak was described as being on Church Street between Churchill Row and Charlotte Street, and 20 homes in the immediate area have been evacuated.The department had asked people to avoid the area, and for people nearby who have not been evacuated to turn off their air conditioners and air exchangers, and to shelter in place or leave the area. Church Street was closed at Churchill Row and George Street, and Charlotte Street is closed at George Street and Saint John Street.
