Photo by Keith Gosse/The TelegramA dramatic rescue unfolded in Portugal Cove Sunday afternoon after a car plunged over a ledge in the town and came to rest on its roof on the rocks about ten metres below and just above the ocean, leaving its two elderly occupants trapped inside.Reports indicate the vehicle flipped end-over-end at least twice before coming to a stop.The incident happened on Beachy Cove Road just west of the ferry terminal just before 4 p.m. When Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered the vehicle balancing precariously on the rocky ledge and called for assistance from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department’s high-angle rescue team. The St. John’s regional fire department high angle rescue team has just arrived on scene. pic.twitter.com/zIA4V7qhiI— Keith Gosse (@TelyPhotoGosse) June 15, 2025A Canadian Coast Guard fast-rescue craft was also on scene in the waters below in case it was needed.A tow truck was eventually called in and the vehicle was hooked to the truck to stabilize it and prevent it from moving as rescuers extricated the two occupants.Both were placed on a backboard and in a rescue basket and then hoisted up the ledge to waiting ambulances.The woman was reported to have serious injuries while the man’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.The rescue effort took about 90 minutes. St. John’s Regional Fire Department’s high angle rescue team is working to save two people in a vehicle that left the road in Portugal Cove and landed upside down on a rocky ledge near the ocean.
