Elections for Kitikmeot Inuit Association leadership set for Dec. 14

Published 11:56 am Monday, October 26, 2026 By William Koblensky Varela Local Journalism Initiative Northern News Service The Kitikmeot Inuit Association is holding elections for president, vice-president of social and cultural development, as well as community directors for Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk and Taloyoak on Dec. 14. The nomination period opened on Oct. 23 and will close on Nov. 6. Prospective nominees must be a voting member of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, not be indebted to the organization by more than $500, and have lived in the region for at least one year. Nominations won’t be accepted from elected members of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), municipal councils, the Nunavut Legislative Assembly, or Parliament. Convictions for an indictable offence or a crime involving fraud, breach of trust or immoral conduct within the past five years will also disqualify nominees. Current acting president of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, David Nivingalok, took his position in June 2025 after president Robert Greenley went on leave for personal reasons. Greenley passed away in September 2025. The Kitikmeot Inuit Association elections are being held on the same day as the NTI vice-presidential elections.
