(Fisheries and Oceans Canada)A Nova Scotia fisherman has been fined more than $76,000 for fishing in a closed area and lying about where he was.Grant William Cameron was sentenced last week in provincial court in Port Hawkesbury.A news release from Fisheries and Oceans Canada said that between Sept. 7-8, 2022, Cameron was authorized by DFO to conduct a test fishery in a defined area to determine the presence of species not fished there commercially, such as Atlantic cod.Instead, Cameron was found to be fishing for Atlantic halibut 120 kilometres away from the test area in a place closed at the time to groundfish fishing. When an at-sea observer asked for his vessel co-ordinates, Cameron provided the location of where he was supposed to be, rather than where he was actually fishing.Judge Alain Bégin sentenced Cameron to $40,000 in fines for setting fishing gear during a closed time and failing to provide the correct position of a fishing vessel at the request of an at-sea observer. The court imposed an additional fine of $36,561.35, which is the equivalent of the gross profits from the sale of 1,990 kilograms of Atlantic halibut.Cameron, who pleaded guilty during a previous court appearance, was also banned from fishing groundfish in two fishing areas for a year and must use a vessel monitoring system on his boat for one year.MORE TOP STORIES
