(CBC)A former salesman has been charged with embezzling more than $4 million through fake applications that police say he submitted to his employer’s rebate program over a span of eight years.The police investigation began in October 2024, when a local building product supplier reported fraudulent activity by a former sales employee, police said in a news release Wednesday.The alleged fraud involved a rebate program set up by the supplier for participating business clients.Between April 2016 and April 2024, police say, the former employee registered four fictitious home building companies, including fake employees.He collected about $4.2 million in rebates after submitting an estimated 5,500 fraudulent applications to the supplier’s program, police say.The employee was fired for unrelated reasons in June 2023, but continued to submit rebate applications, police say.Police say they were notified after the business discovered the fake accounts and rebate claims.The former salesman, 50, turned himself into police on Oct. 8.He’s been charged with fraud over $5,000, forgery, and using a forged document.
