Geoffrey Shyam Stirling, 45, of Laguna Niguel was driving a motorcycle on West Coast Highway when he was stopped at around 9:15 p.m. by a Newport Beach Police Department officer. In a post on X, the department said the officer stopped Stirling for a traffic violation and that Stirling became uncooperative and assaulted the officer. Police say that’s when the officer-involved shooting occurred. Additional officers responded to the scene and provided medical aid to Stirling until the Newport Beach Fire Department Arrived. Stirling was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. The initial investigation is being completed by the Police Shooting Investigation team. Once completed, the matter will be turned over to the Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for an independent review.
