(Belenos/Shutterstock)One of four teens involved in a deadly attack outside a Halifax mall last year burst into tears Friday in Nova Scotia youth court when she realized she would not be immediately released from jail. The girl, who completed a three-month jail term after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of Ahmad Al Marrach, landed back in custody last month after allegedly breaching the conditions of her release.A hearing into the matter began Friday and will resume next month. The girl will remain in custody in the meantime. On Friday, she admitted to one of two alleged breaches. She told the court she had four phone conversations with her boyfriend, who delivered the fatal stab wound to Al Marrach. He’s pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is in the midst of a lengthy sentencing process. All four teens are under court orders not to have any contact with one another. The girl, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, admitted to using her boyfriend’s brother to set up three-way calls in an unsuccessful bid to bypass the release conditions. The other breach allegation, which she is contesting, is that she knowingly associated with someone with a criminal record.According to the Crown, a teenager not connected to the mall stabbing but with a criminal record, was allegedly hiding out with the girl and her mother in Lower Sackville, N.S. The boy was being sought on a warrant when he was arrested at the home. Two RCMP officers testified Friday about finding the girl and the other teen together on two separate occasions. The Crown intends to call youth workers and at least one more police officer when the hearing resumes in early September. The girl pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Al Marrach case and was sentenced to a total of 27 months; three months in jail, followed by two years of house arrest.Al Marrach was 16 when he was swarmed and stabbed in a parkade at the Halifax Shopping Centre in April 2024.ABOUT THE AUTHORBlair Rhodes has been a journalist for more than 40 years, the last 31 with CBC.
