Photo by Contributed /THE TELEGRAMThe Queen Elizabeth Pioneers female hockey team and the O’Donel Patriots boys team were winners in the eighth annual Royal Newfoundland Regiment Memorial high school hockey tournament played at the Paradise Double-Ice Complex and Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s.In the Girls Battalion, the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers won the Beaumont-Hamel Cup with a score of 7-4 over the Mobile Monarchs. Holy Spirit Falcons won the bronze with a score of 4-3 in overtime against the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers. Photo by Contributed /THE TELEGRAMThe Royal Newfoundland Regiment Memorial High School Hockey Tournament is the largest high school hockey tournament in NL and attracts the best high school athletes from across the province, including Labrador. More than 750 players and coaches participated in the week-long tournament, which included 80 games, 32 teams, 22 high schools and three ice surfaces.The tournament commemorates the Regiment’s legacy in NL, including its rich hockey heritage, and encourages friendly competition among high school athletes in NL and commemorates the Regiment’s rich sporting tradition and esprit de corps. Players are exposed to the Regiment throughout the tournament and many claim a familial connection to the Regiment.
