(Andrew Lee/CBC)A coroner’s inquest will examine the death of a man who was fatally beaten by another inmate at an Ottawa detention centre in 2021.Ontario’s Office of the Chief Coroner announced the fact-finding proceeding on Friday, though no date for it has been announced yet. Inquests are held in the hopes of identifying changes to prevent similar deaths in the future. This inquest will examine what led to the death of 27-year-old Zakaria Sheek-Hussein following an altercation inside a washroom at Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC) in February 2021. Sheek-Hussein was taken to hospital but never recovered, dying five months later.Another inmate, Donald Musselman, was charged with second-degree murder in Sheek-Hussein’s death. Musselman ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year but died a short time later. An inquest into Sheek-Hussein’s death is mandatory because he died while in custody. His death was the third homicide to take place within the walls of OCDC in as many years.
