Gavin Moore, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP. (Nicola MacLeod/CBC)A targeted car shooting that resulted in the deaths of two people in western P.E.I. this summer is a “clear priority” for P.E.I. RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit, but while the investigation is “very active,” police say there are few new details they can share with the public. That is mostly for the sake of protecting the investigation, said Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP. “We don’t want to bias witnesses with information. We don’t want to inform [the] accused about the progress of an investigation, and we don’t want to limit the techniques or direction the investigation can go by sharing too much,” Moore told CBC News Monday. The incident happened on Aug. 8 on Hackmatack Road in Urbainville, near Wellington. What police are calling a ‘targeted’ shooting, leaving an unidentified man dead, took place on the Hackmatack Road in western P.E.I. on Aug. 8. (Google Maps)Police have said the targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of the road killed a 35-year-old man, believed to be the driver of a 2008 Toyota Corolla. The car then rolled over and hit a utility pole.A female passenger from Summerside, 50, was seriously injured in the crash and later died.Police have said they believe another vehicle was on the road at the time, and a perpetrator fled the scene.“This is a very isolated place. This is not a place where people would normally frequent or happen to just be driving through on a regular basis,” Moore said. “And with that, I think all Islanders can view that with a similar lens.”Police previously released a photo of the car they say “may be connected” to the incident: a white, four-door 2007 Honda Accord. Police said it could have the P.E.I. licence plate 202NX.On Aug. 13, RCMP in P.E.I. released this image of a vehicle that they say ‘may be connected to the incident’ that claimed the lives of two people. It’s a white 2007 Honda Accord sedan with four doors, and may have the P.E.I. licence plate 202NX. (Submitted by RCMP)The RCMP’s specialized Underwater Recovery Team was also deployed to assist with the investigation. Information from the public can play a key role in the investigationMoore said police are still asking anyone who may have information they believe can help in the investigation to share it with the RCMP. “Oftentimes it can be something very small, something that someone may think is minor, but when you add that with other information, it can really help an investigation,” he said.“Police work is often a case of looking under every rock and trying to make as many pieces of information come together as possible.”Anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle is asked to contact Prince District RCMP at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300. People who want to stay anonymous are asked to call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).RCMP have also launched an online portal where the public can anonymously share images or video related to the case.“You know, [in] TV shows a crime is solved and worked through in half an hour,” Moore said. “Unfortunately, that’s not the case, not the reality in many of these types of incidents… In this particular case, this is something that is more dynamic.”ABOUT THE AUTHORMarilee Devries is a journalist with CBC P.E.I.
