Iqaluit man charged with armed robbery; handgun recovered

Published 2:20 pm Friday, December 5, 2025 A daytime robbery in Iqaluit’s Joamie Court area has resulted in one seized handgun and one man facing charges. Iqaluit RCMP say they responded to an armed robbery at 3:37 p.m. on Dec. 3. A man robbed one residence and two people sitting in a vehicle, parked near the home, police say. Police located the suspect and recovered a handgun in the process, according to the Nunavut RCMP. The suspect resisted arrest, police say. Kevin Mathewsie, 27, has been charged with resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, three counts of robbery with a firearm, breaking and entering, unauthorized possession in a motor vehicle, tampering with serial number, breach of probation and failure to comply with release order. Mathewsie is in custody and his next court date is set for Jan. 6.
