(Winnipeg Jets)Jets superstar winger Kyle Connor has signed a long-term deal to stay in Winnipeg.The team announced Wednesday it has agreed to terms with Connor on an eight-year contract extension for $96 million (an average annual value of $12 million US).The deal kicks in next season, when the current one expires.It’s the largest contract in the club’s history. Almost two years ago to the day, the Jets reached identical seven-year deals with forward Mark Scheifele and goalie Connor Hellebuyck, each with an average value of $8.5 million US per year.Those extensions came into effect last season.Connor, 28, was the Jets’ first-round pick (17th overall) in the 2015 NHL draft and has become one of the league’s elite scorers. He had 41 goals and 56 assists for the Jets last season, with a plus-17 defensive rating. His 97 points led the team and put him in seventh spot overall in the league. He also played all 13 post-season games for the Jets, leading the club in points (17) and assists (12). His five goals were tied for the team high.His performance last season also earned the Michigan native a spot on the NHL first all-star team.Since becoming a full-time NHLer in 2017-18, Connor has scored at least 30 goals in seven seasons and eclipsed 60 points six times.
