(Trevor Brine/CBC)A power outage in Winnipeg’s Osborne Village area left approximately 1,000 Manitoba Hydro customers without electricity for much of the day Monday.Major retailers in the neighbourhood, including Safeway and Shoppers Drug Mart, were temporarily closed as a result of the outage, which Hydro said began sometime after 10:30 a.m.In a Monday afternoon interview on CBC Radio’s Up to Speed program, Manitoba Hydro media relations officer Peter Chura said the outage was due to an issue with a piece of equipment known as a distribution centre, and had left about 1,000 customers without power in the area, including homes and businesses.  “So that piece of equipment faltered,” Chura said. “We don’t know the cause of that yet, but crews have already started replacing that with the new piece of equipment.”Chura said it would take some time for crews to replace the equipment safely. As part of the work, crews would have to inspect equipment in 60 other locations, he said.  “We want to get this done as quickly as possible, we want to get it done as safely as possible first of all, so that was what was required to get this done safely,” he said. “We understand that it is a lengthy outage. It’s been since about 10:30 this morning, we understand it’s really inconvenient for people, really it’s not fun to have your power out for that long.”That is how long it takes to get the work done, and get it done safely.”Manitoba Hydro posted an update on social media around 7:30 p.m. Monday, saying power has been restored in the area.Chura said any customers should reach out to Hydro if they still don’t have power restored.Information about all power outages in Manitoba can be found by visiting the Manitoba Hydro website. With files from Faith Fundal
