Photo by Logan MacLean /The GuardianArticle contentDeputy Premier Bloyce Thompson and Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown welcomed attendees, with Thompson speaking on behalf of Premier Rob Lantz and Brown giving a brief history lesson on Old Home Week.Article contentBrown drew from a local grade six student’s heritage fair project, which included a timeline for Old Home Week.Article contentBeginning in the 1880s, the exhibition was named Old Home Week during the Second World War, Brown said.Article content“The events during this time were designed to lift morale during World War Two, with the naming symbolizing the comfort and warmth of home.”Article contentArticle contentArticle contentOld Home WeekArticle contentArticle contentAfter Brown, Campbell said Old Home Week will feature its traditional slate of agricultural exhibitions, while also adding or bringing back other features. This includes the annual visit from Campbell’s Amusements, which sets up a midway of rides, games and snacks in the Red Shores parking lot.Article contentOther events will include the extreme lumberjack, junior beef show, stilt walkers, barrel racing, children’s entertainment, sounds of the Island concert series and agricultural shows.Article contentEnglish horse show jumping will also be making a return.Article contentEvent passes are going on sale within the next two weeks. They are $25 when purchased in advance, or $30 at the gate.
