The Lower Yukon River in the Dawson region has been put under ice advisory, as of April 25. According to the Yukon government floods webpage, water levels are slowly increasing in the area as the ice begins to melt. However, the forecast from the government says that the cooler weather expected for the coming days should slow down the rate of snowmelt and thus pace the rise in flows on the Yukon River and tributaries. The advisory states that water levels are expected to fluctuate more once ice movement begins over the weekend. Ice resistance is expected to be low because of warm weather over the winter and spring, but the cloudy weather should make the weakening of the ice more gradual. Ice jams may be more persistent and cause higher water levels. The nearby Klondike River is also under ice advisory. Yukon Parks announced on April 25 that the Klondike River Campground would be closed due to flood risk from breakup on the North Klondike River. A Facebook post from the department asks people to stay away from the area. The ice advisory for the Nordenskiold River has been ended. Contact Talar Stockton at talar.stockton@yukon-news.com
