(Jeff Stapleton/CBC)A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after his girlfriend was shot during an altercation at an apartment on Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg police say.Shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, the man allegedly “produced a handgun which discharged” and struck his 25-year-old girlfriend at close range, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.The woman was seriously injured but escaped the building and waved down members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service who were in the area and who gave her emergency medical care, police said.She was taken to hospital in critical condition with what police called a “life-altering injury” and is still hospitalized.Police said the accused fled before officers arrived, and they were not able to find him that day.Winnipeg police respond to serious incident on Wellington CrescentPolice got a warrant for the man’s arrest and received information Monday afternoon that led them to the area of Fermor Avenue and Beaverhill Road in Southdale, where the accused was arrested around 1:40 p.m. He was detained in custody.
