Man charged with 2nd-degree murder in uptown Saint John death

(Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon/CBC)A man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a man in uptown Saint John Wednesday night.Stewart Craig, 42, appeared in Saint John provincial court on Friday afternoon, his hands in cuffs.He’s accused of killing Harrison Peters, 34, at 101 Carleton St.On Thursday, police said they were called to a multi-unit building on Carleton Street Wednesday at around 10:45 p.m. Neighbours in the building had called 911, reporting a “commotion” inside, Saint John Police Force Staff Sgt. Sarah Hobbs told reporters during a news conference.Officers found an unconscious 34-year-old man with “serious injuries,” she said. First aid was provided but the man was later pronounced dead at the scene.Hobbs said police were investigating the case as a murder, based on the evidence at the scene including the victim’s injuries.She declined to discuss how the victim died or what, if any, weapons were involved.Staff Sgt. Sarah Hobbs of the Saint John Police Force spoke to reporters on Thursday. She said police believe ‘the parties were known to each other.’ (Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon/CBC)However, she did say police believed the victim knew his killer.On Friday morning, police announced a 42-year-old man had been arrested.At the afternoon court appearance, Judge Lucie Mathurin set the case over until Sept. 22 to allow time for Craig’s application for legal aid to be processed.”Hopefully a lawyer will be appointed to you by that time, sir,” she told him.”When we come back I assume there will be steps taken to proceed for the mode of election, your preliminary inquiry and if any other assessment needs to be done, we’ll deal with that on that date, OK?”Craig will remain in custody until then, but could have a bail hearing at a later date in the higher Court of King’s Bench, Mathurin said.Second-degree murder generally refers to a deliberate killing that occurs without planning.It carries an automatic life sentence. The length of time a convicted offender must serve before becoming eligible for parole can range from 10 to 25 years.Although an arrest has been made, the major crime unit continues to investigate, police said.
