(Department of Justice)RCMP have charged a man with second-degree murder in the 2017 death of Laura Ross, a Nova Scotia woman whose remains were found in a burned-out garage. On April 3, 2017, first responders were called to a fire in South Rawdon, N.S.The fire was in a garage next to a house on Ross’s property on Highway 202, and her remains were found inside. Investigators said the fire was intentionally set, and Ross’s death was deemed a homicide. In July 2017, Joshua Eric Crowell of Upper Sackville was charged with second-degree murder, but that charge was withdrawn by the Crown in 2019. Nova Scotia’s Public Prosecution Service said at the time that there was no realistic prospect for conviction, given the evidence. On Thursday, police once again charged Crowell, now 35, with second-degree murder. He was arrested on Wednesday in Halifax.’We never wavered'”Over the course of this exhaustive investigation, officers collected and analyzed a substantial amount of evidence and spoke with many witnesses who shared critical information,” said retired Cpl. Angela McKay in an RCMP news release.”We never wavered in our commitment to Ms. Ross and her loved ones despite setbacks at various times in the investigation, and new evidence has enabled us to now re-charge Crowell.”At the time, RCMP said Ross and Crowell knew each other, but would not describe the relationship.Ross was 27 at the time of her death and was the mother of two young children.
