(Trevor Brine/CBC)Manitoba’s chief medical examiner has called for separate inquests into the deaths of two men.Dr. John Younes has directed probes into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Jonathon Herntier, 38, and Myles Clearsky, 24, three years ago.Herntier died after getting shot multiple times during an altercation with Winnipeg police on Dec. 3, 2022. An Independent Investigation Unit report from 2023 said an officer shot the man four times after Herntier tried to avoid arrest by reversing his vehicle into city police. Herntier reportedly reached out for a gun before he was shot. The police watchdog ruled the use of force was justified.Clearsky died on Oct. 24, 2022. A provincial news release announcing the inquest into his death Friday said the man was transported to the Selkirk Regional Health Centre after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Osborne Community Correctional Centre.The cause of death was acute methamphetamine intoxication, the release said. The manner was undetermined.Inquests must be called if there are reasonable grounds to believe a person was killed by a peace officer in the course of duty or if the death happened while in custody, among other reasons.The date and location of the inquests will be determined by the chief judge of the Manitoba provincial court.
