Manitobans can honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at these events

(Prabhjot Singh Lotey/CBC)Tuesday marks the fifth official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, with a series of events set to happen across Manitoba memorializing the children who died while attending residential schools and honouring the survivors who were harmed by the system. It’s also known as Orange Shirt Day, which was founded by survivor Phyllis Webstad in 2013. Webstad had an orange shirt gifted by her grandmother confiscated on her first day at a residential school in British Columbia in 1973, when she was just six years old. Last year, Sept. 30 became a provincial statutory holiday. Here are some of the events you can participate in on Tuesday.Winnipeg The Southern Chiefs’ Organization will be holding its fifth annual Orange Shirt Day Healing Walk and Powwow, starting with a pipe ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Oodena Circle at The Forks. The walk will begin at 11 a.m., ending at the RBC Convention Centre. The powwow’s grand entry will begin at 1 p.m. at the convention centre. The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre is holding an Every Child Matters gathering at 445 King St. The day will begin with a sacred fire at 9 a.m., followed by a pipe ceremony. Speakers will take the microphone at 10 a.m. A feast will be provided. Events to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, will be held across the province on and around Sept. 30. (Prabhjot Singh Lotey/CBC)The Assiniboia Residential School Legacy Group will be unveiling a heritage plaque at the former residential school site on Wellington Crescent on Tuesday. The event will begin with a pipe ceremony at 7:30 a.m., followed by speeches and the plaque unveiling at 10 a.m. There will be a lunch and space for survivors to share their experiences at 11 a.m. On Sept. 30, admission is free at FortWhyte Alive. The wildlife preserve will host a series of Indigenous-led programming, including a sacred fire, traditional games, medicine walks, powwow demonstrations, craft activities and information sessions. From Sept. 28 to 30, the Manitoba Museum is offering special, all-day programming focusing on the history and legacy of residential schools, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Admission to the museum is free until Tuesday. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be free to the public on Sept. 30, with special programming and reconciliation craft activities in the Garden of Contemplation. Phyllis Webstad founded Orange Shirt Day in 2013. (Prabhjot Singh Lotey/CBC)An honour walk travelling from city hall to the museum will begin at 9 a.m. Webstad will speak at 11:30 a.m., followed by a lunch and performances in the afternoon.BrandonBetween Sept. 29 and Oct. 4, the Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples’ Council and the City of Brandon are hosting Truth and Reconciliation Week, with educational and cultural activities at the Riverbank Discovery Centre.The Orange Shirt Day Walk begins at the Riverbank at 12 p.m. on Tuesday.Thompson Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak and Keewatin Tribal Council are holding a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event in Thompson on Tuesday.Starting at the Lions Sports Park, the full-day event includes a pipe ceremony at 9 a.m., an honour walk at 10 a.m., a light lunch, performances, family-friendly activities and a traditional feast.
