Missing Ahtahkakoop First Nation woman found deceased

The search for a Cree woman from Ahtahkakoop First Nation has ended tragically. Big River RCMP say human remains were found in a “remote rural area” west of Victoire, Sask., on July 18. On Tuesday, the RCMP confirmed in a news release the remains were those of Sherry Michelle Ahenakew, 40. The family of Ahenakew, who went by her second name Michelle, has been notified and “Victim Services made available to them,” the release noted. Ahenakew was reported missing to Ahtahkakoop RCMP on June 12. She was last seen by family members on June 5. Missing person searches were organized in the area where she was last seen on Big River First Nation, 183 kilometres north of Saskatoon. Members of several First Nations in the area took part. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes continues to investigate, and asks anyone with information to contact police by dialling 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com. Continue Reading
