(Submitted by Vera Oh)Cree Nation singer-songwriter Siibii has signed with Ishkōdé Records, an Indigenous and women-owned record label that they say makes them feel loved and safe ahead of their upcoming album drop this fall. Siibii — a non-binary, trans person from Mistissini, Que. — has been making music for years drawing from personal experiences with identity, sexuality, substance-use, housing in Indigenous communities and cost of living. “It was important for me to be able to talk about the real things that make me who I am because that’s part of the realities that we face back home,” Siibii said.On Wednesday, Siibii unveiled their latest single; marking the first release from the upcoming album self-titled Siibii. The track, Body to Body, featuring Oji-Cree artist Aysanabee — also with Ishkōdé Records — sets the stage for Siibii’s full-length project. They said the album showcases their evolving sound and artistry under the Indigenous-owned label.Siibii is a Cree artist from Mistissini, a community in northern Quebec and currently based in Montreal. (Submitted by Vera Oh)The track tells a love story set against the backdrop of Montreal, while still reflecting a connection to their roots.”This is my province. This is where I’m from. These are our lands.” said Siibii. The upcoming album follows years of work after their last EP For Those I Love(d) in 2020. Siibii said they spent that time shaping this new body of work, securing funding, collaborating with peers, and moving from Mistissini back to Montreal to bring it to life.”I’ve been sitting on this album for at least three years and I’m more than ready for the world to hear it,” Siibii said. They describe the album being a deep dive into their inner world; reflecting self-expression but hopefully also creating representation. “I’m a person who struggles like everybody else. And some struggles are very specific to the identity that I possess. But most things, most struggles, they’re kind of universal,” Siibii said. The cover for Siibii’s upcoming self titled album. I’ve had multiple experiences with different record labels, but this one has been the truest, like family,” Siibii said. Aysanabee said the collaboration has been an honour for him too and said he hopes Body to Body lands on people’s playlists.”There’s a specific flattery when someone takes one of your songs and it becomes this moment within their own lives, whether they’re driving, doing their dishes or going for a walk,” he said.”Your song gets to be their soundtrack for that moment, or that portion, or that little task in their life. I think that’s such a privilege to be a part of someone’s life in that way.”For Siibii, seeing the project come together after years of effort is a source of joy and motivation.”I’m already jonesing to make the next project. I have this itch that I haven’t really had in the recent years, I have this itch to create more,This really feels like the beginning of a really long career and I hope that it is because I love doing what I do,” Siibii said.ABOUT THE AUTHORVanna Blacksmith is two-spirit and Eenou-Anishinaabe Bear Clan from the Cree Nation of Mistissini with Ojibwe roots from Wiikwemikoong Unceded Territory.
