KUNIKYUAKPATGA INGNUTANNUATGA AKANALU MANIGATIAKLU Welcome to beautiful Cambridge Bay, land of the Innuinait. I think this time I can say winter is slowly coming. We had snow and it stayed without the rain. Yes, it was raining in October here in Cambridge Bay. The weather has been very mild and warm up here. Campers and fishers have pretty well put their boats and motors away until next summer. Many go out travelling on the land by ATVs, and soon they can use their snowmobiles. Even then, there was less snow than years before. Then other times there was more snow, especially when snow piles up where there are roads around town and towards river and Gravel Pit. There are usually more wet roads from melted snow and then cooler days with frozen puddles and ponds. As you are flying into Cambridge Bay, you can see hundreds of ponds that are already freezing and the land is more brown. We do not have trees up here on Victoria Island. But on the mainland you can see more green in the summer with berries and little trees, as compared to living on an island. Many descendants that now live in Cambridge Bay before this community was ever built, were from Umingmaktok, Kingaut, Kuugjuaq and many other places where our ancestors lived and families were born. Mainly the younger generations were born in Cambridge Bay or at the Yellowknife hospital. Many were born out on the land in snow houses and tents, delivered by midwives. Today, many expectant mothers are sent to Yellowknife, along with their spouses, to wait for the delivery of their babies. We have a new patient boarding home being built in Yellowknife for Kitikmeot patients and escorts. It will house more incoming patients, as the present one is too small now. With the overflow of patients, they have been staying at hotels, which are usually booked to capacity by tourists and travellers. Meanwhile, with the shortage of staff at Yellowknife’s Stanton Hospital, patients are sometimes referred to Edmonton. Nurses are short-staffed and overworked at many health centres in Nunavut too. We are so grateful to all our hard-working nurses in the communities. We hope to see normal services soon — then at times things are back to normal, which is good. A big quana to all our nurses and health staff in Nunavut. Keep going, stay healthy everyone. God Be With You Son. Your grandchildren are beautiful and growing.
