(Google Street View)After nearly two years of struggling to find a site to replace an aging New Glasgow, N.S., nursing home, the town says the replacement long-term care facility will be built on Little Harbour Road. The 200-bed Glen Haven Manor has faced a number of challenges. Earlier this year, 32 residents had to leave after a water main break in the basement caused flooding. Most people were able to be relocated to other rooms within Glen Haven. Mayor Nancy Dicks said it’s been a long journey to this point.“It was really difficult because we were sort of holding our breath the whole time that this was being looked at, and of course not being able to say much until it had been signed off on. We couldn’t be more excited,” she said. The site on Little Harbour Road is the third location for the new long-term care home. In January 2024, town council reversed its decision to build on Brother Street after hearing the impact it would have on the historically Black community. Later that June, the owners of land on Chestnut Street revoked their offer of selling the site for the purpose of building a new facility.Dicks said the groundbreaking will hopefully happen in the next month and then construction could start immediately.A news release from the town said the new facility will have 144 beds and will be divided into “households” that have their own dining, living and activity spaces.Dicks said there have been concerns about the new long-term care home having 144 beds compared to Glen Haven Manor’s 200 beds. She said 144 beds is the maximum number for any new facilities being built in the province. MORE TOP STORIES ABOUT THE AUTHORJane Sponagle is a journalist with CBC in Halifax.
