Published 5:06 pm Wednesday, August 26, 2026 By William Koblensky Varela Local Journalism Initiative Northern News Service Gjoa Haven Mayor Raymond Quqshuun has been named chair of the board of directors for Igluvut Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.’s (NTI’s) non-profit housing organization, while Joe Adla Kunuk has been hired as CEO. Quqshuun said he learned the traditional way of Inuit life by living in an iglu in the winter and a tent in the summer when he was a child. “Having spent my life in Nunavut and much of my career working in community administration, housing and governance, I understand how important housing is to the strength and well-being of our communities,” Quqshuun said. Kunuk was previously the CEO of NTI, president of the Nunavut Arctic College and mayor of Iqaluit. He’ll be responsible for implementing the organization’s programs and building partnerships. “Safe, affordable and culturally appropriate housing is fundamental to strong families, healthy communities and economic opportunity,” Kunuk said. NTI said the appointments mark a shift for Igluvut Corporation to start delivering more housing opportunities after establishing its governance and strategic foundation. Igluvut Corporation was created in October 2025. In March of 2026, Igluvut Corporation committed to build and manage 25 of the 750 homes under an agreement between Ottawa, the Government of Nunavut and NTI.
