(Jeorge Sadi/CBC)A man has been killed after a shooting by police in Sechelt, B.C., on Saturday morning.Sunshine Coast RCMP say they received a report of a man in distress who had an “edged weapon” near a home in the 5900-block of Oldmill Lane just after 3:30 a.m. PT Saturday.Officers say that the man fled back into the home when they arrived, and they attempted to de-escalate the situation over the next several hours, as the man was inside the home with other people, including children.The Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team subsequently arrived, and police say that just before 10:40 a.m., the man was shot after police fired their weapons.”[B.C.] Emergency Health Services personnel were staged nearby and were immediately called in to provide medical care; however, the individual has died,” police said in the statement.A statement from the Integrated Investigations Office (IIO) — the civilian-led agency that investigates all cases of death or serious harm involving police in B.C. — says that four other people were in the home with the man.The Independent Investigations Office, B.C.’s police watchdog agency, investigates all cases of death or serious harm involving police, regardless of whether an offence has been committed. (Gian-Paolo Mendoza/CBC)The IIO says that police first entered the home just before 4:30 a.m. PT, allowing three of the people to safely leave the home.One other person remained, however, and police say they were uninjured after the shooting. No officers were hurt.If the IIO finds that there are reasonable grounds that an officer may have committed offences in the case, they can recommend charges be filed by the B.C. Prosecution Service.IIO chief civilian director Jessica Berglund said in an interview that there were several officers who responded to the man in distress, though she didn’t provide an exact number, saying they were in the early stages of their investigation.”We’re asking any witnesses, who may have witnessed this incident, or who have video footage of the incident — whether that’s security cameras, or dashcams, or cellphone video or any kind of video footage — to please contact the IIO,” she said.
