The City of Ottawa says its speed cameras will continue to stay in use until the ban next Friday. (Buntola Nou/CBC)Existing Ottawa speed cameras will continue to issue tickets until the provincial government no longer allows it starting Nov. 14, according to a statement from the City of Ottawa.Last Thursday, the Ford government passed legislation to ban speed cameras across the province, revoking municipalities’ legal authority to use them in community safety zones and school zones. The ban followed Premier Doug Ford’s vow to remove the cameras after calling them “nothing more than a cash grab” in September. The changes apply to all speed camera sites despite Ottawa city council’s unanimously passed motion urging the province to allow the city to keep cameras in school zones. The city said people who are issued speeding tickets by the cameras prior to the ban will still need to pay their fines, and that tickets will continue to be processed by existing procedures.Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said last week that temporary, larger signage will be installed before the ban takes effect in all municipal speed camera-impacted zones. His ministry can now direct municipalities to install specific signs in school zones, according to the city. If those signs don’t go up in time, the city said the province can enter municipal roads to complete the work. The city said work is underway to assess the speed camera ban’s effects on road safety, staffing and financial resources, including implications for the 2026 budget.ABOUT THE AUTHORMarissa Meilleur is a reporter for CBC Yukon in Whitehorse.
