(Shane Hennessey/CBC)The Prince Edward Island government has purchased land in Three Rivers on which it plans to build a new community health centre and, eventually, a new Kings County Memorial Hospital. In a news release, the province said the 34-hectare plot of land is located on the outskirts of Montague off of Route 4, the A.A. MacDonald Highway.”We are planning for the future of health care in Prince Edward Island, with a focus on what Islanders will need in the years ahead. Securing this land is a key step as we work toward a new Kings County Memorial Hospital,” P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz was quoted as saying in the release.”It reflects our long-term commitment to supporting strong communities across the province.”The current 30-bed community hospital has served the region since it was built in 1971. Its emergency department has faced frequent closures in recent years due to physician and nurse shortages.Plans to replace the aging facility were first included in the province’s 2021 capital budget, which set aside $13.3 million over five years for the planning process. At the time, the province said construction on the new facility would start in 2025.According to Thursday’s release, specific timelines for design and construction haven’t been determined. The next phase will involve site planning and consultations with community members, staff and other stakeholders will continue this summer.
