(CBC)A 25-year-old man has been charged after several pedestrians were threatened with a knife at Portage and Main, one of whom jumped into a passing security vehicle as they were being chased, Winnipeg police say.Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, officers were called with reports of an armed man threatening pedestrians with a knife at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street, police said in a Saturday news release.The iconic Winnipeg intersection reopened to above-ground pedestrian crossing for the first time in 46 years just over a week ago.One of the pedestrians, who was being chased by the armed man, jumped into a nearby security vehicle and contacted police, the news release said.Officers found the 25-year-old suspect near Portage and Main, but he fled before being taken into custody a couple blocks away, near McDermot Avenue.A knife was recovered during his arrest. No injuries were reported.The man has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and failing to comply with the conditions of a release order. He was detained in custody.
