(Jeff Stapleton/CBC)A 32-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash Monday morning in western Prince Edward Island. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene on Route 132 in Northam, about 30 kilometres west of Summerside, as the result of a cellphone crash detection alert just before 7 a.m., P.E.I. RCMP said in a news release.Police said initial indications appear to show that the car crossed the centre line and went into the ditch on the opposite side of the road. The Prince County man, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was treated at the scene by Island EMS and members of the Tyne Valley Fire Department. He was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries, police said. RCMP said they do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash. The provincial coroner’s office is investigating along with police. Cellphone crash detection uses a phone’s motion sensors, along with microphone and GPS data, to identify patterns indicating a severe car crash. If a crash is detected, the phone sounds an alarm and displays an alert for 10 seconds. If the user doesn’t cancel the alarm, an emergency call is placed and an audio message is played to emergency services with co-ordinates of the vehicle.
